A
Flash Gordon Extravaganza!
Flash Gordon was a big hit when it debuted as
a sci-fi adventure comic strip in 1934. That year
a super-cheesy 7 minute film version featuring
the cool new Flash Gordon toy rocketships was shown
at the Chicago World’s Fair. Then in 1936
it was made into the best-loved and most imaginative
serial of all time.
Buster Crabbe as Flash with
sexy Dale Arden and Dr Zarkov head for Mongo to
stop Ming the Merciless from destroying Earth.
It includes hawk men, shark men, dinosaurs, a horned
gorilla, a lobster monster, lion men, monkey men,
amazing costumes, futuristic art deco sets and
lots of spaceships on wires. It was edited into
a feature length movie which will be screened with
the rare 1934 short plus clips from the 1980 Dino
DeLaurentis trashy disco version that failed miserably
to capitalize on the Star Wars craze.
Members should bring some great food for a scrumptious
potluck dinner before the feature. Some bottom
feeders just come for the great food! It sure beats
dumpster diving!
Also stay tuned FINALLY for the LAST episode of
the serial The Lost Planet
from 1953!
On the par with an Ed
Wood movie, it’s considered the worst serial
ever made with
unintentionally hilarious dialogue like "How
are we going to find it,
it's the Lost Planet." It was the last sci-fi
serial ever made…for good
reason. |
